The Artisans

They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old RAVEN WEATHERSBY gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad's drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven's stepdad's drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she's ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries' clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can't imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?
The Artisans is a delectably rich, layered and dark YA Southern Gothic inspired by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont's classic Beauty and the Beast.
"The Artisans has all the elements I love - spooky intrigue, strong friendships, and a romantic tension to be savored." ~ Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil trilogy.

Chapter-by-Chapter-header---About-the-Author

Julie ReeceBorn in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

5 Star Review & Giveaway - Something About Love by Elana Johnson #NovelInVerse #romance

Below the information on this novel is a special promo for Elana's first in-verse novel, my review, and a giveaway.

About SOMETHING ABOUT LOVE: High school senior Olivia Winging gave up her love of photography when she gave up her boyfriend, Trevor Youngblood, a year and a half ago. She broke things off with Trevor because her mom married his dad, and dating your step-brother? Creepy.

Livvy hasn’t been on good terms with her mother since, and one of her stipulations for staying at the Youngblood’s every other weekend is that Trevor can’t be there. When she gets nominated for the Junior Photography in Excellence award, Trevor insists she enter. She agrees—only if every photo in the portfolio can be of him. Knowing that Livvy can capture a person’s deepest secrets through her lens, Trevor hesitates before accepting the deal.

As Livvy gets behind the lens of her camera again, her love of photography is rekindled. Unfortunately, the time she spends with Trevor also re-ignites the old flame for him she’s kept smothered for so long.

In order for Livvy to finish her portfolio, she’ll have to face her feelings for Trevor as well as deal with the animosity between her and her mother. Livvy’s always been able to capture a person’s soul from behind the camera—but she’s not sure she likes it when the lens is suddenly focused on her. If she can’t find a way to forgive her mother and admit how she feels about Trevor, Livvy may end up losing more than just the photography contest. She could lose her heart.

Praise for Elana’s first verse novel, Elevated:

“The taut poetry keeps tension high. The plot is deftly paced, as past intrudes on present, like a photograph emerging in developing fluid.” ~San Francisco Book Review

“Every word Johnson writes carries an emotional heft that lifts readers up to the highest happiness and then sends them crashing down to the depths of despair. It is easy to flow from the first word to the last without ever putting down the book. Johnson shows outstanding talent in this form, and her words are beautiful, important and deeply felt.” ~The Deseret News

Marlene's Review:
Something About Love is Elana Johnson’s second “in-verse” book. I reviewed the first, Elevated, here. These are the only two in-verse novels I’ve read, I’ve never been interested in this type of writing, and I’ve never appreciated poetry. I'm so glad I didn't let this stop me from reading either of these books. Please comment with other in-verse books you've enjoyed, I think I will continue to expand my horizons.

Other than having to ignore my punctuation editor’s inner voice (cuz really, what’s right and what's wrong, not for me to say!) I loved Something About Love. A lot of it resonated with me, also being the child of a split marriage, like the main character Olivia. I think watching parents' divorce gives a child a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to love and relationships.

Just like I'm so glad I gave Elana’s books a chance, her main character learns to let love happen and enjoy the powerful emotions of the “right” relationship.

Here are some of my favorite lines, which perfectly sum up the character’s journey:

(near the beginning)
I wonder if falling out hurts more than falling in,
Or if it’s like Slipping through the cracks
When no one is looking.

(near the end)
“Falling hurts,” I say, “and
What if he doesn’t fall with me?”
At least I understand
Why people use the word falling
 To describe love.
Falling is wild, and
Uncontrollagle, and
Utterly breathtaking

Read this! You will enjoy it. Here's the Giveaway!

Weekend Warrior Monday - Pico's first endurance ride

This past weekend, I took Pico, an Arabian gelding that I've been rehabbing for the past few months to his first endurance ride. He's got a great story, part of which I shared during April's A to Z Challenge. Since then, he's found his new best horse friend, my mare Ava. They both get picked on by other horses, so are perfectly matched.

Pico has gained weight nicely and although I had to start all over with his training, he has grown to trust me and we can now go almost anywhere together. His feet have been a difficult challenge. They should have been addressed when he was young, but now it's too late. His right front foot is angled very differently from his left. That carries up the leg to the shoulder, so now his natural movement is a bit lopsided. I don't know how that will hold up for longer miles of endurance.

But no matter what, he is one of the best trail horses I've ever seen. He's brave and well behaved, not to mention super fun to ride.

Because of starting his training over and working out the balance issues with his feet as best we could, I've only had 4-5 weeks to condition him. He's done several 12-14 mile rides, so I signed him up for a gorgeous 25 mile ride in Wyoming, called Happy Jack, in the Medicine Bow National Forest.

Gorgeous rock formations, lovely twisty trails through aspen, and beautiful pine trees. Oh yeah, and lots of Wyoming wind! You never know what the weather will bring in Wyoming - I think it got down into the low 40's one night, and the wind howled. The horses shivered until the sun rose.

I'd arranged to ride with another rider bringing a first time horse. The plan was to leave late, so our guys wouldn't see horses racing off and think they needed to join them. Pico was a little concerned with horses behind him, but attacked the rocky trails like his feet were perfect. He never spooked (ok, one little one at an abandoned tire filled with beer bottles - some people!) and was willing to climb steeper hills than we'd practiced on with determination.

His only fault was having difficulty leaving his buddy, Ava. But my husband was wonderful enough to bring her to the vet checks so Pico could stand calmly for the vets. He was a true warrior this weekend. What an amazing horse! I'm lucky to have found him and hope he thinks the same of me.

I'll have to imagine him for the next horse I write into a book! He'll be a great model for a picture if that ever works out!

The sun exploded on On April 18, 2112 in a Class X solar storm the likes of which humankind had never seen.
They had exactly nineteen minutes to decide what to do next.
They had nineteen minutes until a geomagnetic wave washed over the Earth, frying every electrical device created by humans, blacking out entire continents, and every satellite in their sky.
Nineteen minutes to say goodbye to the world they knew, forever, and to prepare for a new Earth, a new Sun.

Generations after solar storms destroyed nearly all human technology on Earth, humans reverted to a middle ages-like existence, books are burned as heresy, and all knowledge of the remaining technology is kept hidden by a privileged few called the Reticents.
Alana, a disfigured slave girl, and Recks, a traveling minstrel and sometimes-thief, join forces to bring knowledge and books back to the human race. But when Alana is chosen against her will to be the Vessel, the living repository for all human knowledge, she must find the strength to be what the world needs even if it's the last thing she wants.

Chapter-by-Chapter-header---About-the-Author

Lisa T. CresswellLisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play "The Queen of the Nile" at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Perhaps that's why she went on to become a real life archaeologist?
Unexpectedly transplanted to Idaho as a teenager, Lisa learned to love the desert and the wide open skies out West. This is where her interest in cultures, both ancient and living, really took root, and she became a Great Basin archaeologist. However, the itch to write never did leave for long. Her first books became the middle grade fantasy trilogy, The Storyteller Series. Her first traditionally published work, Hush Puppy, is now available from Featherweight Press.
Lisa still lives in Idaho with her family and a menagerie of furry critters that includes way too many llamas!

#WeekendWarrior Monday - Pikes Peak

Nope, I didn't climb Pikes Peak. I did drive past it as I trailered my horse to a trailhead where we did 12.5 miles, and I committed to taking him to a 25 mile ride next weekend.

But... Pikes Peak. It is an amazing mountain. Great history, gorgeous views (check out the link) from below and on top.
pikespeakmarathon.org

And people love to climb it. It's a 14'er, so always on the list of those trying to climb them all. Every year around the 4th of July, car racers from all over the planet converge to see who can drive up the fastest. And in August are the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon.

Manitou Incline - www.manitouincline.com

In the past, I've thought anyone who wanted to race up a mountain on foot was crazy. But annoyed I couldn't do it on horseback. Things have changed a bit. This year I lost 20 pounds and have exercised regularly.

Now when I see the reports of people climbing the Incline, I want to join them. The incline is in rough shape and is scheduled to be closed in a couple days, after the 2014 Pikes Peak Marathon is run. It should re-open this winter. I've made a goal to climb it when the weather is decent (it snowed on Pikes Peak a week ago, can happen any day of the year!) I haven't climbed a Fourteener since I was in high school--we won't discuss how long ago that was! This one is definitely going on the bucket list.

What physical challenges have you put on your bucket list? Are those goals getting closer? Please share your plans and what you do to make sure they don't remain in the bucket!
