RTW: What movie improved on the book?

My choice is ALL THE PRETTY HORSES, by Cormac McCarthy. I actually can't say if the entire book is not as good because I haven't made it past page 10. I cannot read it, no matter how hard I try. There are no quotation marks! I may not be the biggest fan of experimental writing, but that type of experimentation just fails on me. There are also some incredibly long sentences. One is 13 lines long! By the time I've forced myself to read every word, I forgot the first 5 lines and couldn't tell you the noun or verb.
The movie was great, though. Lots of imagery, powerful characters and a fascinating time in Mexico/US history.

  1. Oh, I haven't seen that movie! But now I will have to watch and compare!

  2. I've not read this book, nor seen the movie. Yes, experimental writing can be interesting, and quite expressive. As long as it doesn't lose you, and it makes some kind of sense. Once you've stopped communicating, you may as well give up, since that's kinda why we write, isn't it?

  3. Like Colin, I haven't seen the movie or read the book but I can tell just by what you've said that I wouldn't read the book. I HATE long sentences and no quotation marks??? What's up with that?

  6. I haven't seen the movie or read the book. Maybe I should rent it! No quotation marks drives me insane in books. I read one like that once and, while I made it through, it took forever because it would give me headaches.
