Summary
After a terrible virus ravages the planet, Carly Daniels, one of the few survivors, hides in her apartment in Juneau trying to survive the best she can with only occasional forays to gather food. With her is Sam, a wolf puppy she found starving on the streets. He becomes her companion and a reason to continue when giving up sometimes seems like the more attractive option. Still dazed with shock and grief, she hopes for the world to go back to normal soon.
She is discovered by Justin, an ex-soldier who is intent on making his way to Florida before the winter sets in. Justin coaxes her out of her hiding place and convinces her to join him on his journey, because a warmer climate will be their best chance  against the extremes of Mother Nature.
Together, they begin a perilous journey through a nation laid to waste by the disaster. Challenges abound along the way. The weather, injury, and shortage of supplies all help to slow them down. In time, they discover that they aren’t the only survivors. Some are friendly but some have had their minds destroyed by the high fever. Then there are those who simply take what they want, leaving Carly and Justin with no choice but to defend what is theirs.
But their journey is not without joy and love. Together, they face every struggle, including an unplanned pregnancy. Despite the perils of bringing a child into a world of chaos, their baby is a new beginning for themselves and a symbol of hope for the other survivors they find along the way.
This is the story of their journey to find a place to begin a new life, and a home in each other.

Author Interview
Interview with Lissa Bryan

Did you learn anything new with this book and what was it?

I learn something new, writing-wise, with each book. I still overuse adverbs to an almost criminal extent and my grammar is uneven at best, but I’m getting better. It’s slowed my writing pace quite a bit because I now stop to consider each line as I write it. They always advise you not to edit as you write, but I can’t help it. It’s almost an automatic reflex after having to go back and rewrite paragraphs so many times.
Research-wise, I learned a lot, as I do with each book in this series. Some of it has probably landed me on a Homeland Security watch list, and a lot of it I’ll probably never use, such as how to skin a ‘gator, but hey, it’s always good to learn new things, right?

If you had it all to do over again, would you change anything about the series?

The End of All Things was never intended to be a series. I meant for it to be one book, and I told my editor I thought I could do it in less than 80,000 words. I had “written” it in my head, so I was estimating based on how long it felt in my mind. I was off by a mile. When I crossed the 65K mark, I realized I wasn’t even near the half-way point in the story. So, I ended the first book at what seemed like a good spot and figured I’d do a sequel. But I had other things I wanted to write in the meantime. That was a mistake, too. I should have dived right into writing the sequel.
After I finished writing the second half, I realized I wasn’t really done with these characters. Carly and Justin were clamoring in my mind, insisting there was more to their story. And so I wrote the third volume to complete their arc, though I still hear from Justin time to time, telling me what he’s up to.
If I were writing it today, planning it out as a series from the beginning, there might be a smoother transition, and a more even tone, but in the end, I learned a lot from the experience, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?

There were a lot of challenges. First was in the amount of research it required. I had to think about how every aspect of life would be affected by the end of modern technology, and how my characters could overcome the challenges it would present. That wasn’t easy. I’d be typing along and suddenly it would occur to me, “Hey, would that still work?” and off I’d have to go to see how these modern conveniences function and whether some of them would be able to operate without human intervention.
Psychologically, it takes you to a dark place to imagine the end of the world. It’s a world in which something like 99% of the population has died, meaning I’m writing a world in which I’m likely dead, along with everyone I love. It’s a world in which my loved ones who need modern medical technology wouldn’t survive. It’s a lawless world where the strong exploit and prey upon the weak.

That’s one of the reasons I admire Carly so much. She’s able to see the best in human kind, and she’s determined that the world they rebuild is going to be even better than the one before.  She refuses to let the darkness win.

#interview with Lisa Cresswell @chapterxchapter @peach83352 @month9books #giveaway

ABOUT VESSEL:

Title: Vessel
Publication date: May 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Lisa T. Cresswell

The sun exploded on April 18, 2112. It exploded in a Class X solar storm the likes of which humankind had never seen.

They had nineteen minutes.

Nineteen minutes until the geomagnetic wave washed over the Earth, frying every electrical device created by humans, blacking out entire continents, every satellite in their sky.

Nineteen minutes to say goodbye to the world they knew, forever, and to prepare for a new Earth, a new Sun.

Generations after solar storms have destroyed nearly all human technology on Earth and humans have reverted to a middle ages like existence, all knowledge of the remaining technology is kept hidden by a privileged few called the Reticents and books are burned as heresy.

Alana, a disfigured slave girl, and Recks, a traveling minstrel and sometimes-thief, join forces to bring knowledge and books back to the human race. But when Alana is chosen against her will to be the Vessel, the living repository for all human knowledge, she must find the strength to be what the world needs.

1.       Where/how did you come up with the idea for your story? Did it suddenly pop into your head or were you brainstorming?
My stories seem to grow out of things I’ve seen, read, or heard about on NPR – usually a combination of all three!  I had read about solar storms and the dangers they can pose to our satellites and our power grid. E-books were really taking off about that time, and everyone was wondering if we might stop printing books altogether some day. It got me wondering, what if all our books became electronic in the future, and we suddenly lost them? How catastrophic that would be!  I always wanted to take part in NaNoWriMo, so I wrote up the initial outline for Vessel and started writing in November 2011. I didn’t win NaNo that year. I write too slow! But I kept working on Vessel off and on for several months until I finally finished. It sold to Month 9 Books in 2013.

2. Did you start with the main character, the world or the overarching concept?
It’s been so long ago, I’m not sure what came first. I think it was Recks. I had put the name in my back pocket for a future story. When I finally wrote Vessel, he seemed to fit. Most of my stories do start with characters.

3. Panster or Plotter? Or in between?
I originally tried to be a pantser years ago, but I failed miserably at it. I learned, after a lot of grief, that I absolutely MUST have an outline figured out before I start to write. I have to know beginning, middle, and end, or I will get bogged down and lost every time.

4. Are you a fan of writing contests?
They’re all right. I entered one of my first books in a YA discovery contest and it won third, which got me a phone call consultation with an agent. She requested to see the full manuscript, but she didn’t end up representing me. Overall, I think it was a good experience and it gave me the courage to keep trying.

5. How did you find your agent? How many query letters did you send?
I’ve sent dozens of queries over the years, but I’ve yet to find an agent. ;) I seem to have better luck with editors.

6. What's the best marketing tool you've found so far?
I think the best marketing tool is a really great story. Tweets don’t sell books. Blogs don’t sell books. I’m not even sure if paid advertisements sell books. If people like a book, and they tell other people they liked it, that’s the best advertising there is.

7. What do you like best about your mc?
Alana is strong, strong, strong.  She doesn’t think much of herself at the beginning, but she overcomes her self-doubt. She’s been so beaten down, but she never loses hope for something better. I love her spirit.

8. What do you like best about your main antagonist?
Hmm. Anders is not very likeable. I find him rather terrifying to tell the truth. He’s cold, calculated evil.

9. Anything else you would like to share about your journey or your upcoming launch, including links to giveaways or ways people can help spread the word?
I just want to say thank you so much for hosting me. I’d be tickled to death if folks ordered the book and added me as friend on Goodreads.  I love to hear from readers, either through reviews or directly on my blog  or Twitter.

I should also add that I’m donating a portion of my book proceeds to the International Justice Mission to help end slavery.  http://lisatcresswell.blogspot.com/2015/04/even-bookworms-can-help-endslavery.html  Alana suffers through slavery in the dystopian future of Vessel, just as many people around the world suffer through slavery right now.  It’s my sincere hope that one day slavery will only exist in fiction. Please visit www.ijm.org to learn how you can help too.

ABOUT LISA T. CRESSWELL:

Lisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play “The Queen of the Nile” at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Perhaps that’s why she went on to become a real life archaeologist?
Unexpectedly transplanted to Idaho as a teenager, Lisa learned to love the desert and the wide open skies out West. This is where her interest in cultures, both ancient and living, really took root, and she became a Great Basin archaeologist. However, the itch to write never did leave for long. Her first books became the middle grade fantasy trilogy, The Storyteller Series. Her first traditionally published work, Hush Puppy, is now available from Featherweight Press.
Lisa still lives in Idaho with her family and a menagerie of furry critters that includes way too many llamas!

~~EXCERPT~~
Matronly-Duties-3D-Paperback
My body shakes at the thought of what could have happened to me yet again. I’ve heard stories about the slums, and I have to take a few deep breaths to calm myself.
“I was silly running away, I get it. I just couldn’t stay in your home any longer.”
Howard sighs. “Just because my parents raised us with traditionalist values doesn’t mean we are anything like the Trads. You accused us of being a drain on society, but you don’t even know us.”
“You’re right, I don’t. But you don’t know me either. If you did, you would understand why it’s hard for me to understand your way of life. It goes against every law, moral, and convention I’ve been taught. So I can’t be sorry for what I said, even if I’m sorry I ran out of the house.”
Howard takes a deep breath, then exhales long and slow. The expression on his face looks a bit like pity but with a dash of guilt mixed in. “Look, maybe I’ve judged you unfairly based on preconceived notions, but—”
A loud bang echoes outside. Howard glances at me with a panicked look on his face, and then pulls me off the crate onto the floor behind. I sit up, and turn to yell at him, but male voices outside keep my mouth closed. I instead huddle closer to Howard as he puts his hand around my shoulders. He pulls me in until I’m tucked against him.
“Did you see where she went?” a man’s voice asks.
“Nah, she just vanished.” The voice of this one sounds young.
“Damn, the boss isn’t going to be pleased about this.”
The crunch of shoes against pavement indicates they are on the move again. The sounds trail off until they’re no longer audible. I sigh in relief, all the tension fleeing my body.
“Are you okay?’ Howard asks, rubbing my shoulder.
I glance up, only then noticing how little space is between us. His blue eyes have flecks of grey in them, and there’s a smattering of freckles covering his nose and cheeks. His warm breath tickles my cheek almost like a caress, and his jaw has the barest hint of a five o’clock shadow. He really is captivating.
“I’m fine,” I eventually say, the words a mere whisper.
The butterflies in my stomach return with a vengeance. Howard licks his lips as they turn up ever so slightly in a smile.
“Good.”
I can’t stop the sigh that slips past my own lips. Howard leans forward a little, then moves closer still until his mouth is pressed against mine. I don’t dare move. A zing of something, I’m not sure whether it’s pleasure or fear, shoots through me. His lips are soft and wet, and the sensation is unlike anything I’ve felt before. I can’t even decide if I want him to continue or stop. When he pulls away though, a feeling of disappointment bubbles up inside me.
My first kiss.
Goosebumps cover me from head to toe, and unbidden, my fingers move to my lips. Glancing at Howard, he stares at me for a minute, then moves to sit further away.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
I shrug. “It’s okay.”
Howard frowns and then looks across the room.
Part of Matron training is learning not to form close relationships. It doesn’t mean it never happens. I’ve heard the odd story here and there from the other women, and I realise that’s probably what Gail was trying to tell me at breakfast the other day. But in all honesty, I can’t remember the last time I had real physical contact with anyone, above all with a man.
We sit in uncomfortable silence for a few minutes. Tension rolls off Howard in waves.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Come on,” Howard whispers. “We need to get to the house before those guys come back.”

~~MY INTERVIEW~~
1) Where/how did you come up with the idea for your story? Did it suddenly pop into your head or were you brainstorming?
I don’t remember exactly when it happened but one day a question popped into my head ‘what would the world need to be like for women to rule everywhere.’ and it kind of snowballed from there.

2) Did you start with the main character, the world or the overarching concept?
I Think probably the world, then the character came next and probably the concept last.

3) Panster or Plotter? Or in between?
Most definitely a panster though the more I write I am starting to plot some.

4) Are you a fan of writing contests?
I think they can be useful. In fact the contract for publication of Matronly Duties was awarded to me after I entered a writing contest.

5) How did you find your agent? How many query letters did you send?
I don’t have an agent and in the case of Matronly Duties as per the previous question I didn’t send out any queries.

6) What’s the best marketing tool you've found so far?
I think it is a toss up between blog tours and social media like Facebook and twitter

7) What do you like best about your mc?
I think the thing I like most about Bethanie is being able to follow her on her journey she is very innocent/clueless at the beginning of the book but by the end she has blossomed in a strong/caring woman.

8) What do you like best about your main antagonist?
I’m not sure i like my antagonist that much but if I had to pick something it would be his sense of entitlement.

9) Where can readers follow you?

When people begin coming down with a quick-spreading illness that doctors are unable to treat, Lil's worst fears are realized. With her parents called away on business before the contagious outbreak-her father in Delaware covering the early stages of the disease and her mother in Hong Kong and unable to get a flight back to New Jersey-Lil's town is hit by what soon becomes a widespread illness and fatal disaster. Now, she's more alone than she's been since the "incident" at her school months ago. With friends and neighbors dying all around her, Lil does everything she can just to survive. Excerpt from PANDEMIC

At this point in Pandemic, there have been local cases of the Blue Flu, including one death. Lil visits her best friend, Megs, who is getting dressed to meet a boy she has only corresponded with online. This scene is a snapshot of both the mundane aspects and the very deepness of their friendship.

-- I found Megs surrounded by a dozen shirts heaped on her bedroom floor.
“What should I wear?” she asked. “I need something to go with my favorite jeans.” She plopped on her bed, face flushed.
I hesitated, torn between worrying about her safety and wanting to support her romantic longings. “You’re sure you want to go through with this?”
 She nodded.
“Then don’t worry, we’ll find something. You have great clothes.” I glanced at her alarm clock. It was 6:15.
She followed my eyes. “I’ll be fashionably late.”
I pulled out a turquoise blouse that had fabric cutouts in the back.
“I need to look good from the front, not when I leave,” she said.
“Right.” I told her about Ethan while I searched her closet for something better.
“Are you sure you want to start with him again?” she asked.
“I don’t know. He made it sound like, how could I not give us one more chance?” My phone pinged. “Ugh.”
 “What’s the matter?”
“Ethan’s already texting me.” I sighed. “He’s looking forward to tonight.”
“Ah, it’s nice to see he hasn’t lost that stalker-ish quality.”
 I glared at her.
“Lil, you know I’m right. If your heart’s not in it, don’t go.”
“I miss my old life before . . . everything.” I kept flipping through her closet. “But dating Ethan again won’t magically turn back time. It won’t make the other stuff vanish.”
“I guess you’re right,” I said. “Hmm . . . at least we both have dates tonight.”
“It’s not a date. I’m going over to his house.”
“I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about tomorrow,” she said. “I can’t believe I’m finally meeting him.”
Near the back of the closet, a black top with three-quarter sleeves was lodged between two camis. I didn’t even take it all the way out before Megs shook her head. Her face was shiny and I realized she was sweating. “Are you nervous?”
“A little. I’m not feeling great. I think it’s all the excitement.”
“You shouldn’t go if you don’t feel well.”
She scowled at me. “I have to go. I can’t explain it. It feels like part of something bigger, like destiny.”
I pursed my lips together to keep from spouting my opinion. After pulling out a pale blue shirt, I held it against her. “This will look good with— ” My fingers brushed against her arm. She was burning hot. I put the back of my hand against her forehead the way Mom always did to me. “You feel feverish.”
“I’m fine.” She swayed as she tried to stand.
“Megs, you’re sick.” Fear made my voice quiver. “You can’t go. This is crazy.”
“It’s too late to cancel.” She sank onto her bed, coughing. “Can you get me a glass of water while I change?”
“Sure.” I hurried to the kitchen. Mrs. Salerno sat at the counter, a newspaper spread in front of her. I had to tell her about Megs. She’d forgive me for missing her date, eventually. “Mrs. Salerno, I . . .” She looked at me, waiting. Then we both heard it: the crashing sound from Megs’s room. We raced up the stairs. Megs lay sprawled on the floor next to her toppled bedside table.
 “I felt dizzy, and then . . .”
Mrs. Salerno scooped her up and laid her on the bed. “Let me get the thermometer.”
After her mom left the room, Megs looked at me, pleading. “I need you to do me a favor.”
I knew what she was about to ask. “No way.”
“Please? You don’t have to talk to him. It’ll be crowded, so he won’t notice you. Look for the guy carrying a book, something that would have meaning to me. Then I’ll tell him later how sick I was, that I couldn’t make it.”
“I’m supposed to meet Ethan soon. And a crowded shop mean germs.”
“Could you tell him you’re running late? It wouldn’t take much time. If you walked in and out, it’s like two minutes of exposure.” She widened her eyes, pleading.
This was important to her, no matter how much I disapproved. I considered it. For my best friend, I could probably handle a few moments in a public place. Pandemic teaser
